I traveled to Luxembourg and (a very small part of) Belgium with Colin. We rented a car (mercedes E class!!!) which was awesome! We left Friday evening, stayed in a little town on the German/Luxembourg boarder and then hit the road to Luxembourg Saturday morning. On Saturday we drove straight to Luxembourg city, walked around, saw the city and all of those lovely things, then hit the road again and traveled into Belgium. We just had a cup of coffee in Belgium and walked around a little, but hey, at least we went to Belgium! Then we got back in the car and traveled to a bunch of little towns in Luxembourg on the eastern side where a lot of the action was in the Battle of the Bulge. My favorite was a little town called Vianden with a beautiful castle perched on top of a mountain.
The weather on Saturday was absolutely GORGEOUS! All the winding roads, hills and valleys, fall colors, it was just breath taking. Colin got to enjoy the most of it because I had to focus on the road and not kill us.
On saturday evening we hadn't made a hotel reservation so we thought we would just start driving until we found a little town where we could stay. That was all fine and well until we got a flat in the town of Echternach...NICHT COOL! Neither Colin nor I knew how to change a flat so we walked into the city trying to find a hotel that could house us and then a phone where we could call the rental place. The problem though, was that the whole city was completely booked out because of a marathon they were hosting that weekend. SCHEISSE! Trying not to break down I went into a Texico and tried to ask the lady behind the counter for help. Good thing for my mad German skills because the guy behind me heard me and was like, "Oh, my friends and I can help you out!" And that is just what happened. Him and all his buddies drove us back to our car, changed the tire for us and were the most wonderful people we met on our whole trip. We couldn't have thanked them enough! We asked if we could pay them or anything or do something but they were just generous Luxembourgers. But one of the girls there said that she would just LOVE a postcard from the states so Colin and I are both going to send her one when we get back.
So, with the wheel fixed our problems still wern't solved because the wheel was only an emergency one. That means we could only drive like 60 kilometers per hour on it. Plus, we still needed a place to stay. So we putt-putted our way across the boarder into the town of Bitburg (where the beer is brewed) and found more helpful people who sent us up with a really cute hotel room.
On Sunday morning to putt-putted our way down to the city of Trier where they had a new rental car waiting for us so we could drive back home. We talked around Trier for awhile (beautiful!) and then made our way slowly back to Frankfurt. We stopped at a few little towns again, got lost a lot, and had lunch in a little resturant where the food gave me hives. NICHT COOL!
All around the trip was wonderful and I had a great weekend. I will leave you all with some pictures of our trip!
